• Walter H. Leimert founded Leimert Park as one of LA’s first planned communities. While it’s origins were designed to be ‘restricted’, the neighborhood has become a beacon of African American arts and culture. 
• Two years after the Watts Riots, the Brockman Gallery (1967-91) opened its doors; it was an opportunity for artists of color to show their works - Betye Saar, David Hammon and John Outerbridge just to name a few. 
• Iconic architects Morgan, Alls & Clemens, whose works include the Wiltern and El Capitan Theaters built the arte deco  Vision Theatre which is still a Leimert Park landmark today. 
• There are many culturally inspired clothing and book stores, galleries, cafes and restaurants in Leimert Park likeEso Won BookStore, Queen Aminah’s Cultural Clothing and Ackee Bamboo Cafe & Adassa’s Cafe.
• The late filmmaker John Singleton called Leimert Park “the Black Greenwich Village ''.
